Un acto político inusual y muy original. Un hito atlético. Una hazaña de resistencia humana ante los elementos. Un viaje riesgoso. Estas y muchas otras expresiones han sido usadas para describir el viaje marítimo del puertorriqueño ambientalista y defensor de los derechos humanos Alberto De Jesús “Tito Kayak” a través de las antillas caribeñas el pasado verano. En el amanecer del 21 de junio, día del solsticio, De Jesús partió en kayak desde la península de Paria en Venezuela hacia la isla de Granada, comenzando así una travesía de sobre mil millas náuticas hacia Puerto Rico.

De Jesús, quien no aparenta los 54 años de edad que tiene, no hizo este viaje extraordinario para impresionar la gente- aunque ciertamente lo logró. Estaba en una misión política, una cruzada marina por la libertad. El ha señalado esto en toda oportunidad que ha tenido, ya sea en entrevista de prensa o conversación personal. De Jesús kayakeó el Caribe para llamar atención y recabar apoyo internacional para la causa de la liberación de Oscar López Rivera, un boricua que lleva 31 años encarcelado en Estados Unidos.

According to Carmelo Ruiz-Marrero, Western powers have been grabbing seeds from the global South for centuries in order to develop new plant breeds. His talk provided a political and historical context to the current global battle around the patenting of seeds and crops with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

It was September 16, the first day of GMO-Free Midwest, the St. Louis portion of Occupy Monsanto. On the panel with Carmelo was Dr. Ollie Fisher, whose first job after getting his Chemical Engineering degree was working at Monsanto. He left that position after becoming distressed with the way the company uses its technology to subjugate Africa and coerce it into producing food that compromises human health.

Priti Gulati Cox was also on the panel “GMOs as a Weapon of Global Domination.” She described effects of GMO crops on her native India. Monsanto advertises heavily to persuade farmers to switch to its new wonder seeds. After multiple crop failures, thousands of Indian farmers have committed suicide, unable to deal with the shame that bankruptcy has brought.

The following day, September 17, Occupy Monsanto sponsored actions across the globe. By beginning with a day of panels, the St. Louis event encouraged a dialectical interplay between thought and action. Dialectics can help understand historical processes that develop over centuries and can guide the growth of a particular struggle.

Moogfest, the festival of electronic and visionary music, takes place on Saturday and Sunday in Asheville, N.C. — the city music pioneer Bob Moog called home. Moog was the inventor of the Moog synthesizer. He died in August 2005 at age 71.

Electronic music has become so pervasive that we now take it for granted. But it was a new concept in the mid-1960s, when Moog created his first synthesizer. Invented in 1965, the product went on to usher in a new era of rock and electronic music. The Beatles used a Moog synthesizer on their 1969 Abbey Road album.

The synthesizer became more accessible to musicians and composers after Moog made his first portable, the Minimoog, in the early '70s. Moog also had a lifelong interest in the theremin, an electronic instrument that produces ethereal otherworldy sounds and has been used on many science-fiction soundtracks.

On a U.S. tour with their new book, The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance and Hope (forthcoming August 2012 by Haymarket Books), Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan showed how the work of ordinary people—the silenced majority—is pulling back the veil of corporate media and changing the world.

This event was part of the Lannan In Pursuit of Cultural Freedom series.

Denis Moynihan is the co-founder of Democracy Now! Since 2002, he has participated in the organization’s worldwide distribution, infrastructure development, and the coordination of complex live broadcasts from many continents. He lives in Denver where he is developing a new noncommercial community radio station.

Amy Goodman is an award-winning investigative journalist and syndicated columnist, author and host of the daily, independent global news hour Democracy Now! which airs on more than 1,000 public television and radio stations worldwide. Goodman has interviewed several Lannan guests including Noam Chomsky, Eduardo Galeano, and Robert Fisk.

Goodman has also won numerous awards for the radio documentary she co-produced with journalist Allan Nairn, “MASSACRE: The Story of East Timor,” including the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting, the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton, the Armstrong Award, the Radio/Television News Directors Award, as well as awards from AP, UPI, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

In 1991 Goodman and Nairn survived a massacre in East Timor in which Indonesian soldiers gunned down more than 250 Timorese. The Indonesian military banned them from returning. Goodman twice attempted to re-enter East Timor to cover the historic referendum on self-determination. Citing her name on an army blacklist, the Indonesian regime deported her both times.

Goodman has reported from Israel and the Occupied territories, Cuba, Mexico, Haiti and this year became the first journalist ever to interview the jailed U.S. citizen Lori Berenson, serving a life sentence in Peru. Goodman also recently broadcast the first U.S. radio interview with imprisoned East Timor rebel leader Xanana Gusmao. In addition to her daily radio shows, Goodman speaks around the country on university campuses, as well as to human rights, church and community groups about media activism. She also runs workshops at community radio stations on grassroots coverage.

Repasamos las movilizaciones en varias partes de América Latina y compartimos un reporte desde la Coordinadora Latinoamericana de Organizaciones Indígenas. Asimismo, desde Chile nos informa Viviana Catrileo de ANAMURI.

Seguidamente en este programa en vivo de Radio Mundo Real, nos concentramos en varias situaciones de violencia hacia organizaciones y líderes campesinos. En Honduras, donde campea la impunidad por los hechos de violencia hacia los movimientos sociales, el coordinador de La Vía Campesina Internacional Rafael Alegría recibió información de que se preparaba un atentado contra su vida. El modelo sojero-empresarial se cobró una nueva víctima en Argentina. En este caso fue Miguel Galván, campesino de la provincia de Santiago del Estero y del MOCASE.

Por último en Guatemala y a una semana de la masacre de Totonicapán, la Fiscalía demostró la responsabilidad de los militares en los hechos.

Desde Centroamérica viajamos a la India, para conocer el desarrollo de la XI COP de Diversidad Biológica en India, desde donde escucharemos el reporte de Isaac Rojas, coordinador del programa de Bosques y Biodiversidad de Amigos de la Tierra Internacional. En Uruguay se realizó una masiva marcha en defensa de los bienes naturales y contra la megaminería. Radio Mundo Real estuvo ahí y comparte las impresiones de la marcha y parte de su proclama.

Tig Notaro On Going 'Live' About Her Life

"Good evening, hello. I have cancer. How are you?" That's how comedian Tig Notaro began her set at Largo in Los Angeles the day she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. As she uttered those words to the audience, there was nervous laughter, weeping and total silence in response. Comedian Louis C.K. was there that evening, and tweeted this about her performance: "In 27 years doing this, I've seen a handful of truly great, masterful standup sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo." It has been an eventful four months for Notaro. Before her cancer diagnosis, Tig had pneumonia and contracted a severe intestinal virus, for which she was treated in the hospital. Shortly after being released, her mother died in a freak accident -– and then Tig and her girlfriend broke up. So when she got on stage that evening, Notaro tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross, she was "in a very vulnerable, raw place." "I had no idea what was in front of me," she says. "It was really just taking blind steps." When Notaro conceived of the idea, "It just made me laugh so hard just in the shower" — but she wavered as to whether to include the cancer diagnosis in her set that night. Describing herself as a "dry, deadpan, one-liner comic," she says she rarely performs material as personal or revealing as her set at Largo was. "I was scared of offending people and confusing people," she says. "You know, thinking about people that maybe did have cancer in the audience, or had somebody that they loved that had cancer. And then the reality hit me that I have cancer — this is my story." After a double mastectomy, the cancer has been contained and Notaro's prognosis is looking very good. Still, she says, "this is something that is pushing me so far out there in a way that has never been." Notaro has appeared on This American Life and Conan. Her set at Largo, titled Tig Notaro: Live, has been released exclusively on comedian Louis C.K.'s website.
